OYC Summer Race Team Details

The best time of year to sail: Summer!

The OYC Junior Race Teams are an extension of Middle School and High School Sailing. The Junior Race Teams offer something for every sailor who has progressed beyond the learn-to-sail summer classes.

Below is information about both teams: requirements, schedules, costs, etc. Please contact Head Coach/Director Sarah Hanavan if you have any questions, or are unsure which team to sign up for. oychighschoolsailing@gmail.com

Half time Opti/Race Team $175 (less than 5 weeks)

Race Team Fee covers:

  • Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night practices with Opti Race Coach and Race Coach

  • Coaching at NWYRC regattas (need at minimum of 3 sailors to sign up for any-given regatta for a Coach to attend, OYC boats to be used, etc.)

  • An Opti, laser, 420 or FJ dinghy for practices and regattas*

  • Planning and logistical organization to attend regattas

*While Race Team sailors may use OYC boats to race at specific regattas and practices OYC cannot always guarantee transportation of said boats or number of available boats. Parents may have to help with transportation of a chartered OYC boat. The limited number of OYC Optis, laser, c420s and FJ are on a first come first serve basis. See Registration details below.

Fee does NOT cover:

  • Regatta specific registration fees

  • Team Regatta fee (costs the OYC may divide between parents in regards to traveling, i.e renting a truck)

  • Fees to charter non-OYC boats for regattas

  • Lodging (if applicable)

  • Travel expenses

  • Coaching at regattas where it has been specified a coach may/or may not be able to attend OR regattas not list on the Regatta Registration page.

Regatta Registration Fees

  • Every NWYRC regatta has an attendance fee to help cover costs. OYC Junior Race Team’s enrollment fees does not cover any regatta specific fees. Parents will either register their sailor directly with the regatta organizers or the OYC Race Coach will register sailors and collect all fees (depends on the event).

Can I get a pro-rate for missed days?

  • Days missed cannot be prorated. The Summer Race Teams are split between Full and Half Time participants. See the "Costs" portion above for details.

OYC Race Team Regatta Fees

  • Summer regattas are not mandatory, and the OYC may charges a fee for each regatta to cover the Race Coaches hours and travel expenses in addition to the hosts fee. By not including regatta fees in the Junior Race Team enrollment cost we can keep the enrollment cost low, and sailors only pay for the regattas they can attend.

Registration Details: Boats and Classes

Choose your primary boat, then compete in that class over the summer!

  • Sailors who have their own Laser or Opti may be able to store for the duration of the Summer at the OYC

  • The OYC has a LIMITED number of boats that are in competitive racing condition that can be chartered out to sailors.

  • These boats will be allocated on a first-come first-serve basis

    • Specific allocation rules for different boats below

  • Sailors will have to sign a boat-use charter agreement. Sailors and their parents will be responsible for any damage said boat suffers during transport to and from regattas if not on an OYC trailer, and any damage suffered while racing. Sailors and parents acknowledge the age, condition and state of said boat when they charter it; i.e the boat may be older and more prone to damage.

  • The boat-use charter agreement applies to all OYC boats said sailor may use at a competition while on the race-team; i.e if the sailor sails a laser at one event, and then an FJ at the next.

  • Sailors must have a primary "class" of boat they will sail in over the summer, but that does not limit them entirely to that type of boat. This is because if sailors are competing in the NWYRC to accumulate points a sailors must compete in each regatta, in the same class. A sailor can switch classes, but they will no longer be in contention for the overall NWYRC standings.

Optis

  • The OYC has only 13 optis available for Opti Race Team sailors to use

  • If a Race Team Sailor does not have their own opti, and would like to compete in optis for the Summer our 13 optis are on a first-come first-serve basis

  • The first 13 sailors who do not have their own optis and register requesting an OYC opti will be allocated one, and will have priority to use said opti at practices and regattas.

  • The OYC may use all 13 optis for other programming not during race team practices

  • The OYC optis are NOT in competitive condition. By signing the boat-use charter agreement sailors acknowledge they are responsible for any damage incurred while transporting on a non-OYC trailer or during competition, despite the give age and condition of the boat.
